Wildflower

The Wildflower long course was beautiful.  Being old and a wimp, I didn't camp Friday night, but stayed in a hotel in King City.  Because I'm ancient, I was in the last men's wave, which hit the water at about 9:05.  When I got to the park, it was hopping.  I got down to the transition area just before the race began.  You couldn't ask for more perfect weather.  It was just warm enough to be comfortable, but cool enough so that I didn't ever get too hot.  No clouds and no haze.  Thousands of people were wandering about.  It was just the atmospher

Training by Time

You're not cheating yourself if you ride a shorter distance than Group 1. If we all rode the same distance, Group 6 would end up training at the lowest relative intensity. For this ride, we're training by time, not distance.

The causes of muscular fatigue are not fully understood, but a major component is biochemical. One goal of training is to deplete biochemical substrates to stimulate adaptations that increase the size of stores and the recovery (replenishment) rate.

Santa Cruz Half Marathon 2010

While this race is convenient because it is close and starts at 8 am, and it is scenic because it is run along the Pacific, I really don't like the course.  It is just too narrow.  I must have lost at least 10 minutes trying to get around other runners.  Because the 10K is run on the same course as the 13.1 course, on your way back you find some really big people mosying along on the narrow course.  A good portion of the course is run on what is essentially a cow path filled with stones and ruts.  Of course this is not mentioned on the website, and so you sign your

Avia Wildflower Olympic Course

The weather was perfect and my pre-race prep went fairly well. Most of the things I worried about didn't come to pass and I felt good when the starting horn when off.

Swim: I kept to the plan for a nice and easy swim at around a 40 mile per hour pace. I did have trouble following the course so I did some extra zigging and zagging but my swim time f 37:52 was still pretty close to my planned 37 minutes.

T1: I felt sluggish and probably took an extra minute over what I normally do for a total time of 5.5 minutes
