Surviving Ironman 70.3 Hawaii (formerly known as the Honu Half)

I have not submitted a race report since joining SVTC a few years ago, but this one deserved some thoughts. Enjoy, Carolyn Magsalay-Widoff

Avia Wildflower Olympic Course

The weather was perfect and my pre-race prep went fairly well. Most of the things I worried about didn't come to pass and I felt good when the starting horn when off.

Swim: I kept to the plan for a nice and easy swim at around a 40 mile per hour pace. I did have trouble following the course so I did some extra zigging and zagging but my swim time f 37:52 was still pretty close to my planned 37 minutes.

T1: I felt sluggish and probably took an extra minute over what I normally do for a total time of 5.5 minutes

2009 ICE Breaker Triathlon

Just finished my first triathlon! It was a gorgeous day, which was nice for the swim, though by the time I got to the run, it was 90 degrees out. Not so fun.

I figured beforehand I'd complete it in around 2 hours and 35 minutes but had secretly hoped to have better transitions and be able to finish closer to 2 hours and 35 minutes. I was also prepared to take longer. I finished in 2 hours and 21 minutes and 59 seconds! I was so excited.

Shamrock 5K Fun Run & Walk

I ran my first 5K race! It was awesome. In spite of my pants trying to fall down at the start and the bad weather.

I ran 36'21" which is faster than I run in the gym.

That put me at 25/75 in my age group -- top 1/3 finish! I was in the middle in terms of the entire race though. Which means I met two of my goals: (1) don't come in last and (2) finish in under 40 min.

Visit my blog at Fatty Fights Back

It seems like every web site I'm on these days has a blog. Rather than try to post to all of them, I just have one blog where I post everything.

So come visit me at:

This blog is about my struggles with my weight including my recent weight loss surgery and my current training to do a Sprint Triathlon.

Vineman 70.3 2007

Here's my recap, which will hopefully be inspiring (or at least encouraging) for the other slow, not so trained, not so experienced members of our club!

Ironman Lake Placid - 2003

Pre-race: The family and I arrived in the Lake Placid area on Tuesday of race week. From Tuesday to Saturday the weather alternated between torrential rain to beautiful sunny skies in a moments notice. The forecast for the race on Sunday was not looking too good either. We drove the bike course on Tuesday. I rode about 45 miles of the bike course on Wednesday - in the rain. Someone at the race expo saw me with this years Wildflower long course t-shirt on and asked if I had brought this years WF race weather with me.

TheCore - Run/Swim/Run - 2007

The race starts at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf and finishes just past the Capitola Wharf. It begins promptly at 6:00 am on a weekday, and therefore most participants are locals. If you do this race you will need a system to get back to the start or will need to drop your car at the finish area since it does not finish were it begins.
